Powell is a city in Delaware County, Ohio. It is located about 14 miles north of Columbus, the state capital, and is considered a suburb of Columbus.
The area now known as Powell, Ohio, was historically a wilderness contested by the Iroquois League, along with colonial powers Great Britain and France. Throughout the American Revolution, this region was part of the territorial claims made by the states of Connecticut, New York, Pennsylvania, and Virginia as they expanded westward. In 1787, the land was designated as part of the newly formed Northwest Territory. The early pioneers arrived in 1801, and the area was originally referred to as Middlebury, named after the hometown of many of its first settlers in Middlebury, Connecticut.
The area is very close to the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, which features more than 11,000 animals representing nearly 600 species from around the globe. Zoombezi Bay is a 22.7-acre water park worth the entire family’s time, featuring a lazy river, private cabanas, a kiddie play pool, water slides, and more. The Ill-Mannered Brewing Company is a casual place with a nice selection of beers and decent prices. It features a food truck out front and delicious local brews.
