A city about 15 miles northeast of the state capital of Columbus, OH, New Albany is mainly located in Franklin County, with a small portion extending into adjacent Licking County. It is a fast-growing suburb of the Columbus metropolitan area. It is theorized is that the name comes from some of the original settlers migrating from the area around Albany, New York.
The land that would become the city of New Albany was originally founded in the center of Plain Township in 1837 by William Yantis and Nobel Landon. Albany, Ohio, was laid out in 1832, prior to the founding of New Albany. During its history, the community that would become New Albany often went by the name of Hope. It was incorporated in 1856, and the most important business in the area, a sizeable lumber mill, was opened in 1881.
The area is well-known for its performing arts, with the New Albany Symphony Orchestra and the New Albany Ballet Company being part of it. The Columbus Metropolitan Library built a library branch in New Albany, donating book collections and computers to what resulted. Since 1976, every May, the New Albany Founders Day has been celebrated with a large festival, parade, rides, vendors, and street performers.
