Marion, Ohio, serves as the county seat of Marion County and is situated in the north-central part of the state, approximately 50 miles north of Columbus. As the largest city in Marion County, Marion is the central hub of the Marion micropolitan area and is included in the Columbus-Marion-Zanesville, OH Combined Statistical Area.
The city was established in 1822 and named to honor General Francis Marion. It gained its status as a village during the 1829-1830 session of the Ohio Legislature. Historically, Marion thrived as an industrial hub until the 1970s. Today, it remains significant in the rail industry for both CSX and Norfolk Southern and is a key production site for grain-based snacks and various products.
Marion has a rich industrial legacy, notably through the Marion Steam Shovel Company (later Marion Power Shovel), whose machinery was pivotal in constructing major structures like the Holland Tunnel, the Hoover Dam, and the Panama Canal. This company also built the crawler-transporters for NASA’s Saturn V rockets for the Apollo missions.
The city is also celebrated for its cultural offerings, including the Palace Theatre, the Warren G. Harding House, and various museums like the Wyandot Popcorn Museum, Heritage Hall, the Huber Machinery Museum, and the Marion Union Station and Museum.
